Firefly Viewing in Todaiji, Nara

Nara Park is famous for the world heritage, Daibutsu and deer, but there is another thing that you can enjoy only during rainy season.

In Nara park, close to Todaiji temple, are clean streams where fireflies can be seen.

Rainy season in Japan is damp and not cheering as many people say, but there are things to enjoy only during this season, such as flowers like hydrangeas and FIREFLIES!!

There are conditions for firefly viewing:

  1. Clean streams
  2. Temperature -> 20 deg.C (and warmer)
  3. Cloudy
  4. Not windy
  5. Late May to early June (in Kansai area)
  6. Time -> 7:30 pm  to 9:00 pm (Around 8:00 most)

Clean streams are normally found in the country side, so you’d have to travel to the country side. But, here, Todaiji temple, Nara, is located right in the middle of the popular sightseeing area.

I tried to take pics of fireflies in the past 3 years and kept failing, then finally gave up! So, I drew it.

This is what I saw at Nara Park! It was a sunny day. Stars, deer under the sky, and fireflies in the streams in the front. Definitely unforgettable!

If you have a chance, you need to experience this!!! And you also need to have luck, the conditions don’t always meet!
